Parenting skills and tools to help your child break free of anxious emotions

SPACE TREATMENT

What is SPACE?

SPACE treats childhood anxiety by working directly with parents.  By changing parent behaviors, children can build the necessary skills to feel less anxious and better equipped to independently navigate their world.

In this 12 week, evidence-based treatment model you will build the knowledge, skills and tools to help your child overcome anxiety, OCD or other related problems.

SPACE focuses on learning to respond more supportively to your child, and how to reduce accommodations that your family has been making to your child’s symptoms.

As a result, your child will build the resilience and skills they need to successfully manage their emotions and challenges.

What You Can Expect

Beginning Treatment

SPACE begins with learning about childhood anxiety and the role that the parent-child relationship plays in anxiety responses.  Parents DO NOT CAUSE childhood anxiety, but as a social emotion, parenting responses to anxious emotions can impact the trajectory of how they are managed.

By learning about these dynamics, and the principles of boundaries, accommodations, and support, the initial phase of SPACE treatment provides the foundation of knowledge parents need to begin customizing treatment to their child and family.

Target Behavior

With a new understanding of your family system, you are ready to begin implementing all you have learned.

At this stage of treatment, parents will work to identify one of your child’s behaviors that is particularly impacted by their anxious emotions.  We will develop a clear and thorough plan for how you will modify your behaviors to support your child in learning to successfully manage their own feelings and behaviors.

We will also create a communication plan for you to share the changes you will be making with your child, to support collaboration and transparency in your relationship.

Parent Modification

The majority of SPACE works on implementing and troubleshooting through the modifications you’re making to your behavior, and monitoring and assessing improvements in childhood outcomes.

This is where I support you in maintaining and tolerating the changes you’re implementing, so that you can support your child as they make changes of their own.

Once you begin to see your child benefiting from this process, it is easy to build confidence in yourselves and your family.  You will begin to apply the SPACE model to additional child behaviors and quickly internalize a deep sense of trust in yourself and your child.  At the end of SPACE, you will be left feeling confident that your family will continue to thrive as you end treatment and move forward on your own.
